Hormone Behaviour Study

We are currently looking for 5- and 6-year-old boys to participate in research investigating the link between hormones and behaviour.

We are currently looking for 5- and 6-year-old boys to participate in research conducted in the Psychology Department into the effects of hormones on behaviour. This research will explore whether gender differences in behaviour are, at least partially, due to hormones.
Should you agree to take part in this project, you and your child will be asked to visit the university and at a later date, the Southern Community Laboratories. During your visit to the university, your child will participate in a range of activities including choosing between pairs of toys, playing with the toys, drawing various objects, reading a map, and describing the interaction between pairs of objects on a computer monitor. In addition, you will also answer questions about your child’s level of social interest as well as interest and skill with various kinds of objects. Total time for these tasks will be 30 to 45 minutes. In general, we find children enjoy participating in such tasks. In addition, your child will undergo a standard blood test at Southern Community Laboratories to measure levels of MIS. This will only take a few minutes and only a very small amount of blood is drawn (2ml). Children will be given a small gift for their participation and parents will be given remuneration for travel expenses.

What is required from the participant?

Children will receive a small thank-you gift for participating as well as a $5 book token. Parents will receive a $30 petrol voucher to assist with travel expenses.
