Learning from degree students and recent graduates with a residential or foster care background
If you are a New Zealand tertiary institution degree student or graduate aged 17 to 30, who spent a year or more in residential or foster care anywhere in New Zealand since your 14th birthday, you are invited to take part in this study.
Only one other New Zealand research study on the education of children in care has been identified and this new study is one of only a handful of studies internationally on young people formally in care that go on to tertiary education. The purpose of this doctoral research project is to investigate the education experiences of the few university and other tertiary institution degree students and recent graduates with a background in residential care, kin foster care or non-kin foster care. Focusing mainly on secondary schooling, the emphasis of the research is on how participants understand what their education was like for them.
What is required from the participant?
Participants need to make themselves available for one face-to-face interview and a shorter follow-up telephone interview. The face-to-face interview will take place in your local area and at a mutually convenient date and time. A more detailed Research Information Sheet is available for downloading. In terms of any benefits to the participants, in addition to the potential for the study to assist children and young people currently in care, in similar studies with tertiary students with a care background in the US and UK, participants reported that they found their involvement in those projects to be very positive.
